TORKease® Applications for Drilling Operations

Lubricity While Drilling:

To control torque and drag levels during drilling operations, and to provide other associated benefits, TORKease should be added to the drilling fluid in a base concentration of 0.3% to 1.0% by weight (see chart). Thereafter, TORKease concentrations should be maintained by daily additions on a material balance basis. Concentrations should be modified depending upon existing hole conditions, deviation and actual torque/drag levels. Maintaining TORKease in the mud system will provide additional benefits (shale control, etc.), in addition to controlling torque and drag.

Additions 'Down the Drillpipe':

TORKease Concentrate is conveniently formulated and packaged so that it can be added directly into the drillpipe. By adding the product from one or two 5# bags into the drillpipe while making a connection, TORKease is transported directly to the bit; significant benefits have been observed by adding TORKease in this manner (immediate reduced drag and torque, increased penetration rates, etc.).

Concentrated Pills/Sweeps:

Although pre-treatment of the drilling mud with TORKease is beneficial and recommended, pill/sweep treatments of TORKease have provided remarkable results in reducing excessive torque and drag, especially in deviated and horizontal wells. Pill/sweep treatments of TORKease are also effective in conditioning the hole prior to bit trips, logging, or running casing.

Pills (2-4gal/bbl or 2-4#/bbl of Concentrate) of TORKease are mixed in a pill pit, then used to sweep the hole or spotted in the annulus where desired. When drilling/circulation is resumed, the TORKease pill in incorporated into the active system, providing beneficial torque and drag reduction while drilling ahead.

Stuck Pipe Application:

TORKease can be formulated as a superior spotting fluid, to cure stuck pipe and differential sticking problems. When used in a spotting fluid application, TORKease can be incorporated into the drilling fluids system after the drillpipe is freed, to enhance fluid lubricity and reduce torque and drag, and minimize the recurrence of stuck pipe problems while drilling continues.

Stuck Pipe Pill – After determining the appropriate volume of spotting fluid to be mixed, TORKease should be mixed in fresh water or drilling mud in a concentration of 2-4 gal/bbl (TORKease liquid) or 2-4#/bbl (TORKease Concentrate). Once spotted, enough TORKease pill should remain inside the drillpipe to move .5 to 1.5 barrels per hour for up to 20 hours.

Only TORKease remains stable and decreases torque in our geothermal slim-hole, diamond coring operations where existing formation temperatures
exceed 500°F

-New Mexico

Without TORKease on location to provide lubrication for our high temperature geothermal exploration tests, we shut down!

-Hawaii

If you improve TORKease any more, it will be so slick we won’t be able to keep it in the bucket!
